  • Immediate Refund or Airport Refund? Two Numbers Decide It

This guide is written in two parts. English first, Korean below.

    PART 1 — ENGLISH

Korea gives foreign visitors back the 10% VAT on shopping, and there are two ways to get it: at the register, or at the airport when you leave.

Most guides describe both and leave you to work out which applies. In practice you rarely choose — two limits decide it for you, and the useful thing is knowing where they fall before you are standing at a till with a full basket.

    1. The two limits

Immediate refund — the shop deducts the tax at the register and you walk out having paid the lower price. It applies when:

    Limit Value
    Per transaction under ₩1,000,000
Total per person, whole trip ₩5,000,000

Both were doubled in January 2024, from ₩500,000 and ₩2,500,000.

Airport refund — you pay the full price, keep the receipt and paperwork, and claim on departure. This is what you use when a purchase is over the per-transaction limit, or once you have used up the ₩5,000,000 total.

The ₩15,000 minimum purchase applies to both. That figure is the one English sites most often get wrong — many still say ₩30,000, which has been out of date since 2024. More on that in the tax refund guide.

    2. Which one you will actually use

For most visitors: immediate refund, nearly always.

A ₩1,000,000 single transaction is a lot of cosmetics. Unless you are buying electronics, a designer bag, or doing a very large single haul, you will sit under the per-transaction limit every time.

The ₩5,000,000 running total is more likely to bind on a long shopping trip — but it is a whole-trip figure across all stores, so you would need to spend heavily over several days to reach it.

So the practical reading is: assume immediate refund, and treat the airport route as what happens for one specific expensive purchase.

    3. Why immediate is better when you can have it

    It is not just convenience.

You get the money at the moment of purchase, not weeks later and not in a queue on departure day. There is nothing to carry, nothing to submit, and nothing to lose.

Airport refunds have failure modes that immediate refunds do not. The goods must be unused and available for inspection, the paperwork must match the receipt, and you must reach the counter with enough time before your flight. Every one of those is a way to end up with nothing.

And the airport process costs you time on the worst possible day. Departure day with luggage is already tight — see sending your suitcase ahead if that is your situation.

    4. When you are forced to the airport route

One purchase over ₩1,000,000, or a total past ₩5,000,000. If that is you, the conditions tighten:

    • Do not use the goods. Not “barely used” — unused. Customs can ask to see them
    • Keep the receipt and the refund slip together. Receipt, slip and goods must match
    • Allow real time at the airport. This is a queue on a day when you have others
    • Check whether your item needs inspection before check-in — if it goes in your checked bag, customs may need to see it first, which changes the order you do things in

The last point catches people. A large item packed into a suitcase and checked in is no longer available to show.

    5. What to do at the register

The mechanics are simple, and the same wherever you shop:

    1. Show your passport. Not a copy or a photo — the physical passport is what the terminal reads
    2. Say “tax refund” before the transaction is completed. After payment it is harder to add
    3. Check the receipt — an immediate refund shows the deduction applied
    4. Keep the paperwork if you were given a slip rather than a deduction

At Olive Young’s tourist-designated stores, immediate refund is standard rather than something you have to negotiate — those stores and what the designation means are covered in the Global Tourism Zone guide.

    6. The refund is not exactly 10%

VAT is 10%, but you will not get 10% of the price back. Refund operators take a handling fee, so the realised rate lands roughly at 7–8% of the purchase price.

This is normal and not a scam. It does mean the “10% off” framing in shop signage is optimistic, and worth adjusting your expectations for on a big purchase.

    7. Before you shop

    • Immediate refund applies under ₩1,000,000 per transaction and ₩5,000,000 per person per trip
    • Both limits doubled in January 2024 — older guides use the old figures
    • Minimum purchase is ₩15,000, not ₩30,000
    • Most visitors will only ever use immediate refund
    • The airport route is for one large purchase, and it has more ways to fail
    • Goods must be unused for an airport refund, and available for inspection
    • Bring the physical passport and ask before paying
    • You get back about 7–8%, not the full 10%

  • Olive Young’s “Global Tourism Zone”: Two Numbers, and Guides Keep Mixing Them Up

This guide is written in two parts. English first, Korean below.

    PART 1 — ENGLISH

If you have read about shopping at Olive Young, you have probably met the phrase “Global Tourism Zone” and a number attached to it. Sometimes the number is 14. Sometimes it is 110.

Both are correct. They describe different things, and the difference decides whether you should walk twenty minutes to a particular branch or just use the one in front of you.

    1. The two numbers

Roughly 110 stores nationwide are designated 글로벌관광상권 — Global Tourism Zone. This is a service designation. It changes how the store is staffed and laid out (Olive Young Newsroom).

Fourteen stores — a subset — additionally run the partner and payment promotions you see written up in travel posts: Alipay and WeChat Pay campaigns, membership tie-ups, seasonal coupons (Olive Young Newsroom).

Every one of the 14 is also one of the 110 — but the great majority of the 110 are not among the 14.

    Roughly 110 stores The 14
What it is Service designation Promotion group
    Multilingual staff
    English product labelling
    Immediate tax refund
    Payment-linked campaigns
    Partner tie-ups

Named stores in the 14 include Myeongdong Town, Hongdae Town and Olive Young N Seongsu. Olive Young does not publish the full list of either group, which is part of why the numbers drift in retellings.

    2. What the designation actually gets you

This is the part worth planning around, because it does not expire.

At a Global Tourism Zone store you can expect:

    • Staff who speak English, Japanese or Chinese — not everyone on shift, but someone
    • Product information in English alongside the Korean
    • Layout tuned for visitors — the items foreign shoppers buy most are placed near the entrance
    • Immediate tax refund at the register on purchases over ₩15,000
A tiered Olive Young display stand labelled GLOBAL HOT ISSUE, stacked with sheet masks and skincare boxes.
The layout change, made visible. Stands like this gather what foreign shoppers buy most — you do not have to know the brands to find them.

That last one matters more than the discounts people chase. The refund is roughly 7–8% and it is automatic and permanent, where a payment campaign might be 5% and gone next month. The details, including the ₩15,000 threshold most guides get wrong, are in our tax refund guide.

The concentration is where you would expect: Seoul — Myeongdong, Hongdae, Gangnam — plus Busan and Jeju.

    3. What the 14 add, and why you cannot plan around it

The promotions are real. They are also short, rotating, and frequently over by the time you read about them.

Two examples from early 2026, both long finished:

    • An Alipay campaign discounting ¥15 on purchases over ¥15, running three weeks
    • A WeChat Pay campaign giving ¥20/¥50/¥80 back at ¥200/¥500/¥880 spend levels, running about four weeks

Notice the shape: specific payment app, specific spend tiers, specific short window. That is the pattern, and it is why a blog post listing “the current Olive Young foreigner discount” is almost always describing something that has ended.

There have also been partner tie-ups — a Don Quijote membership offer giving a ₩4,000 coupon on purchases over ₩80,000, and a Trip.com hotel booking offer giving coupons for ₩100,000 and ₩300,000 spend levels.

Do not build a shopping trip around any of these. Check what is running when you arrive.

    4. The one that tends to stay

Among the rotating campaigns there is a steadier arrangement worth knowing: WOWPASS, the prepaid card aimed at foreign visitors, has offered 5% back on purchases over ₩100,000, capped around ₩10,000, regardless of nationality.

Global Tourism Zone stores also run Bu¥ No₩ — a small selection of products, around six at a time, priced specially for foreign shoppers. The selection changes; the arrangement persists.

Neither is a guarantee. But if you want one thing to check at the register, WOWPASS is the one most likely to still exist.

    5. How to find out what is actually running

Since nothing published in advance stays true, here is the order that works:

    1. Ask at the register. Staff at these stores field the question daily
    2. Look for the campaign signage in-store — it is in English and posted where you cannot miss it
    3. Use the in-store AI kiosk if you are at one of the three stores that has one — it answers payment and refund questions without queueing. See our kiosk guide
    4. Check the app rather than a blog post with a year in the title

One thing to keep separate: Olive Young Global (global.oliveyoung.com) is the international online shop. Its membership tiers and coupons do not apply in Korean stores. A QR code on in-store signage may point you there, and the pricing is a different system entirely.

    6. So which store should you go to?

For most visitors the honest answer is the nearest Global Tourism Zone store, not the nearest of the 14.

The service designation gets you the English labelling, the multilingual help and the instant tax refund — which is the bulk of the practical benefit. The extra promotions are worth maybe 5% on a specific payment method during a specific window, and you will not know which until you are standing there.

If you are already in Myeongdong, Hongdae or Seongsu, you are near one of the 14 anyway. If you are not, the twenty-minute detour is probably not worth it.

For the four branches around Hongik Univ. Station specifically, and which one to pick, see our Hongdae store guide.

    7. Before you go

    • “Global Tourism Zone” means roughly 110 stores. The 14 is a smaller promotion group inside it
    • The 110 designation gets you English labelling, multilingual staff, instant tax refund — and it does not expire
    • The 14 add payment-linked campaigns that are short and rotate constantly
    • Named stores in the 14: Myeongdong Town, Hongdae Town, Olive Young N Seongsu
    • Immediate tax refund over ₩15,000 is worth more than most campaigns, and it is automatic
    • WOWPASS has offered a steadier 5% over ₩100,000 — check it at the register
    • Do not plan a trip around a discount you read about. Ask when you arrive
    • Olive Young Global online is a separate system. Its coupons do not work in Korean stores

GLOBAL HOT ISSUE

올리브영 글로벌(global.oliveyoung.com)은 해외 배송 온라인몰입니다.

  • Paying by Card in Korea: The Question at Checkout That Costs You 3–7%

This guide is written in two parts. English first, Korean below.

    PART 1 — ENGLISH

The terminal asks whether you want to pay in Korean won or in your own currency. Your currency looks helpful — you can see exactly what it costs without doing math.

Choose it and you just paid a markup of 3–7%, sometimes more. Every time.

This is called dynamic currency conversion, and it is the single most expensive habit a visitor can pick up in Korea. It is also the easiest to fix: always choose won.

    1. The rule: always pay in Korean won

When a card terminal or an ATM offers you a choice of currency, pick KRW. Not dollars, not euros, not yen — won.

Diagram of the currency choice at a card terminal: paying 50,000 won in Korean won versus 38.50 US dollars in your home currency, with 3-7% added by the terminal.
This is an illustration, not a screenshot of a real terminal — the prompt only appears on foreign-issued cards, so it cannot be photographed here. The shape of the choice is what matters: same purchase, two currencies, one of them with a markup already inside it.

Choosing your home currency hands the exchange rate to the merchant’s payment processor instead of your card network. Studies of dynamic currency conversion find markups of 3–7% above the interbank rate, sometimes 12% or more (Beancount). Investigations have found that in every case examined, the customer paid more — between 2.6% and 12% more.

Your own bank will charge a foreign transaction fee either way, typically 1–3%. That fee is unavoidable. The DCC markup stacks on top of it and is entirely avoidable.

On a ₩300,000 shopping day, choosing wrong costs roughly ₩9,000–21,000. On a two-week trip it adds up to a nice dinner you did not get to eat.

    2. Why the offer looks so appealing

The screen shows your home currency, which feels like a courtesy. Sometimes staff will helpfully press the button for you, assuming you would prefer to see familiar numbers.

They are not trying to cheat you. The commission goes to the payment processor, and merchants and ATM operators receive a cut. It is a business model built on the fact that “pay in your own currency” sounds like a service rather than a fee.

If you are ever unsure, say “Korean won, please.” Staff hear it constantly and will not find it strange.

    3. Watch for it in three places

    • Card terminals in shops — the most common. The prompt appears before you approve
    • ATMs — the same choice appears when withdrawing cash, and the markup is identical
    • Online checkouts — Korean sites sometimes default to your currency based on your card

If the receipt shows a total in your home currency, DCC was applied. Some banks let you dispute it; more practically, watch for it next time.

    4. Where your card will not work at all

Avoiding DCC assumes your card works. In Korea, sometimes it will not.

Usually fine Department stores, hotels, chain restaurants and cafes, convenience stores (GS25, CU, 7-Eleven), major tourist attractions.

Often a problem Small local shops, traditional markets, street food, unmanned kiosks, and — this catches people out — most Korean delivery apps, which generally require a Korean card or bank account.

Transit is its own case. Foreign cards are not generally usable to tap directly on subway gates; you need a transit card such as T-money. Seoul has been rolling out kiosks that accept foreign cards for topping up, and broader card compatibility is planned, but do not arrive assuming your Visa will open the gate.

    5. The local workaround you cannot use

Here is why the cash advice below is firmer than it looks.

When a Korean customer meets a shop that does not take cards, they rarely reach for cash. They send a bank transfer — account number, phone, done in seconds. It is so routine that many Koreans carry no cash at all, and small merchants are comfortable being paid this way.

That exit is closed to you. A bank transfer needs a Korean bank account, and a Korean bank account needs an Alien Registration Card — issued to people staying 91 days or more, and taking two to four weeks to arrive after you apply. A tourist stamp does not qualify.

There are edges to this. A few banks, Hana and Shinhan among them, will sometimes open a basic account on a passport and valid visa. But branches refuse it routinely, internet banking and check cards are often withheld, and none of it is something to plan a trip around.

So the chain that saves a local — card declined, transfer instead — has no second link for you. What is left is cash.

The partial bridge is a prepaid card aimed at foreign visitors, such as WOWPASS, which you load with cash and spend like a card. It does not open a bank account, but it covers some of the gap. See transit and prepaid cards.

    6. So carry some cash

Not much, but some. Common guidance is ₩50,000–100,000 for general sightseeing, and ₩150,000–200,000 if you plan to spend time in traditional markets or eating street food.

When withdrawing at an ATM, the same rule applies: choose won, not your home currency.

    7. Quick checklist

    • At every terminal: choose KRW, never your home currency
    • Same at ATMs — the markup is the same
    • If staff offer to “help” by selecting your currency, say “won, please”
    • Check receipts — a total in your home currency means DCC was applied
    • Carry ₩50,000–100,000 cash; more for markets and street food
    • Bank transfer is what locals use instead of cash — and you cannot. An account needs an Alien Registration Card, so cash is your only fallback
    • Do not count on a foreign card for delivery apps or subway gates
    • Your bank’s foreign transaction fee (1–3%) is separate and unavoidable — DCC is the part you control

  • Olive Young near Hongik Univ. Station: Which of the 4 Stores Should You Visit?

This guide is written in two parts. English first, Korean below.

    PART 1 — ENGLISH

If you search “Olive Young Hongdae,” you will find several stores within walking distance of Hongik Univ. Station. They are not all the same size, they do not all close at the same time, and only one of them is officially designated as a store for international visitors.

This guide covers all four locations around the station, how the tax refund actually works (the minimum amount is lower than most English travel blogs still say), and what to check before you go.

    1. Which store should you go to?

All four stores carry the core Olive Young range, so the choice comes down to size, hours, and whether you want tourist-oriented services.

    Store Best for Closes
Hongdae Town (홍대 타운) Largest selection, pop-up events, tourist services 23:00
Hongik Univ. Station (홍대입구역점) Closest to the subway exit, quick stops 23:00
Hongdae Playground (홍대놀이터점) Spread over 3 floors, in the middle of the nightlife area 23:00
Hongdae Intersection (홍대사거리점) A quieter alternative on the main road 22:30 (확인요망)

Arriving with a suitcase? Leave it at the station first — there are four storage options around Hongik Univ. Station and the cheapest one takes app bookings, so you can skip the queue.

If you only visit one, choose Hongdae Town. It is the store in this area that sits in the smaller group of 14 running partner and payment-linked promotions, inside the wider Global Tourism Zone network of roughly 110 stores (Olive Young Newsroom). Those two numbers get mixed up constantly — what the label actually gets you is a separate story. It also runs both immediate and airport-style tax refunds.

An Olive Young shopfront: the green circular logo mounted above glass doors.
What you are looking for on the street — the green Olive Young logo above glass doors. Branch names are written in Korean, so navigate by the address rather than the sign.

Note that Hongdae Intersection closes 30 minutes earlier than the others (확인요망). If you are shopping late, that is the one to avoid.

    2. Addresses and opening hours

All four are open daily, 7 days a week.

    Store Address Hours Phone
    Hongdae Town 57, Hongik-ro 6-gil, Mapo-gu 10:00–23:00 02-3142-6392
    Hongik Univ. Station 156, Yanghwa-ro, Mapo-gu (LG Palace, 1F) 10:00–23:00 02-3144-3963
    Hongdae Intersection 140, Yanghwa-ro, Mapo-gu 10:00–22:30 (확인요망) 02-337-6746
    Hongdae Playground 29, Wausan-ro 21-gil, Mapo-gu (Seokjeon Bldg, 1F–3F) 10:00–23:00 02-3141-7679

Store details above are as listed by Korea Trip Tips, a Korean travel information service.

Put these addresses into Naver Map, not Google Maps — Google will show you the location but will not walk you there. See our guide to navigation apps in Korea.

Check hours on the day you go. Opening hours change on public holidays and during events, and stores stop admitting customers shortly before closing time. The Olive Young app or official website will have the current hours.

    3. How the tax refund works

This is where most English-language guides are out of date.

The minimum purchase is 15,000 KRW — not 30,000 KRW. Korea lowered the threshold from 30,000 to 15,000 won effective January 1, 2024 (Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism / Korea.net, Nov 2023). Many travel blogs still quote the old figure.

The same reform doubled the refund ceilings:

    Before 2024 Now
Minimum purchase 30,000 KRW 15,000 KRW
Immediate refund, per transaction 500,000 KRW 1,000,000 KRW
Immediate refund, total per stay 2,500,000 KRW 5,000,000 KRW

How to claim it in store:

    1. Bring your passport — a photo or copy is not accepted.
    2. Tell the cashier “tax refund” before paying.
    3. The 10% VAT is deducted on the spot, so you pay the reduced price immediately.

If your purchase goes over the per-transaction ceiling, the amount above it is handled as a refund at the airport instead of at the register. Keep your receipts either way.

For the full rules — who qualifies, the 3-month deadline, and how to claim at Incheon Airport — see Korea Tax Refund 2026: The Minimum Is ₩15,000, Not ₩30,000.

    4. Payment and discounts

International cards are accepted, including Visa and Mastercard issued overseas. Your own bank may add a foreign transaction fee and use its own exchange rate.

At the 14 promotion stores — which in this area means Hongdae Town only — Olive Young periodically runs extra discounts tied to payment methods aimed at international visitors: Alipay, WeChat Pay, UnionPay, and WOWPASS. Past rounds have offered anything from a flat discount on small purchases to 10% back on larger ones, with each payment method running on its own schedule.

These campaigns rotate every few weeks and expire. There is no permanent rate to plan around, and a discount you read about in a blog post has likely ended. Ask at the register, or look for the current campaign signage when you arrive — this is also something the in-store kiosk can answer (see the next section).

An in-store Olive Young sign in English reading GLOBAL TOP PICKS, top-ranked this month loved by beauty fans worldwide, with a SALE badge and a QR code.
This is what the campaign signage looks like — in English, and easy to spot from across the floor. Note the QR code goes to the online Global Mall, which is priced separately from the store you are standing in.

For store-wide sales, Olive Young runs its major seasonal sale (올영세일) four times a year, roughly at the start of each season, plus a smaller promotion at the end of each month. Exact dates are announced shortly before each sale rather than published a year ahead, so check the app rather than a “2026 sale calendar” post — those circulating online are estimates made by fans, not official schedules.

One thing to be aware of: Olive Young Global (global.oliveyoung.com) is the international online shop. Its membership tiers and coupons explicitly do not apply in Olive Young’s physical stores in Korea, so a Global account will not get you a discount at the Hongdae registers.

    5. Shopping without Korean

You do not need to speak Korean, and as of this summer you do not necessarily need to find an English-speaking staff member either.

In July 2026, Olive Young began rolling out an AI Shopping Assistant kiosk that lets you talk to an AI avatar and shop on your own (CJ Newsroom, July 8, 2026). It handles:

    • product explanations and recommendations based on your skin type or preferences
    • stock checks
    • finding where an item sits inside the store
    • routine questions like payment methods and VAT refunds

The kiosk works in 8 languages. For anything that needs a human, staff use an AI interpretation service covering 38 languages, via a QR-code chat or voice through a tablet, trained on K-beauty terminology so product names and ingredients come through correctly.

Do not expect the kiosk in Hongdae yet. The initial rollout covers three Seoul stores only — Dongdaemun History & Culture Park Station, Apgujeong Jungang, and Ewha Jungang (Aju Press). None of them is in this area. Olive Young says it will expand nationwide but has not published a schedule.

The staff-assisted interpretation service is a separate system and appears to be more widely deployed, but Olive Young has not confirmed which stores have it. If language is your main worry, ask a staff member — they may be able to pull up interpretation even where there is no kiosk. See our guide to the AI kiosk for what it actually does.

    6. Before you go — quick checklist

    • Passport in your bag, not a photo of it
    • Purchase total of 15,000 KRW or more if you want the tax refund
    • Say “tax refund” to the cashier before paying
    • Heading out late? Hongdae Intersection closes at 22:30 (확인요망), the rest at 23:00
    • Want the biggest store and tourist promotions? Hongdae Town
    • Worried about Korean? The AI kiosk is not in Hongdae yet — ask staff for interpretation instead
    • Check today’s hours in the app — holidays and events change them

올리브영 글로벌(global.oliveyoung.com)은 해외 배송 전용 온라인 몰입니다.

  • Korea Tax Refund 2026: The Minimum Is ₩15,000 — Not ₩30,000

This guide is written in two parts. English first, Korean below.

    PART 1 — ENGLISH

Search “Korea tax refund” and nearly every English guide tells you the same thing: you need to spend at least ₩30,000 in one store to claim VAT back.

That figure has been wrong since January 2024.

The threshold is ₩15,000. If you have been walking past smaller purchases because you assumed they did not qualify, you have been leaving money on the counter. This guide covers the current rules, who actually qualifies (there are conditions most guides skip entirely), and how to claim at the register or at the airport.

    1. The minimum is ₩15,000, not ₩30,000

Korea halved the threshold from ₩30,000 to ₩15,000 effective January 1, 2024 (Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism / Korea.net). Incheon Airport’s own refund guidance also states ₩15,000 as the qualifying amount (Incheon International Airport).

The same reform doubled both refund ceilings:

    Before 2024 Now
Minimum purchase, per store per receipt ₩30,000 ₩15,000
Immediate refund, per transaction ₩500,000 ₩1,000,000
Immediate refund, total during your stay ₩2,500,000 ₩5,000,000

Why do so many guides still say ₩30,000? Most were written before 2024 and never updated. Travel content ages badly, and a number buried in the middle of a long guide is rarely revisited.

The practical effect: a ₩18,000 skincare purchase now qualifies. So does a ₩16,000 souvenir. Those add up over a trip.

    2. Do you actually qualify?

Most English guides stop at the amount. But the amount is only one of four conditions, and travelers get caught out by the other three.

You qualify if all of these are true:

    • You are a non-resident foreign national. The regulation defines eligible visitors as “non-residents” under the Foreign Exchange Transactions Act In practice this is commonly applied as less than 6 months in Korea, which is why long-stay students and workers usually do not qualify. Note that the six-month figure comes from how non-residency is determined, not from the refund regulation itself — if you are near that line, ask the store or customs rather than assuming.
    • You spend at least ₩15,000 in a single store on a single receipt. You cannot combine two ₩8,000 receipts.
    • You leave Korea within 3 months of the purchase. This one is written directly into the regulation (Art. 6(1)(1)): the goods must be confirmed as taken out of the country within three months of purchase. Buy something in March and fly out in July and the claim is dead.
    • The goods are unused and unopened. Incheon Airport’s guidance is explicit that customs verification applies to unopened, unused items.

That last one deserves emphasis. If you buy a cosmetic product and start using it during your trip, you may not be able to claim it at the airport. Keep anything you intend to claim sealed until you have left the country.

    3. Immediate refund vs. airport refund

There are two routes, and which one applies is mostly decided for you by the amount.

Immediate refund (즉시환급) — the VAT is deducted at the register, so you simply pay less. Nothing to do at the airport. This is capped at ₩1,000,000 per transaction and ₩5,000,000 across your whole stay.

Airport refund — you pay the full price in store, receive refund paperwork, and claim before departure. This is the route for purchases above the immediate-refund ceiling, and for stores that do not offer instant refunds.

Immediate refund is almost always better where available: no paperwork, no queue on departure day, no risk of missing the counter because your flight was early. If a store offers it, take it.

Not every shop participates. Look for tax refund signage, or simply ask at the register.

    4. Claiming at the register

    1. Bring your passport. A photo or photocopy is not accepted — staff need the physical document.
    2. Say “tax refund” before you pay, not after. Once the transaction is closed it usually cannot be reversed.
    3. The 10% VAT is deducted on the spot and you pay the reduced amount.
    4. Keep the receipt anyway. If any part of the purchase exceeds the per-transaction ceiling, the remainder is handled at the airport.

That is the entire process. It adds maybe thirty seconds at checkout.

While you are at the terminal: if it offers to charge you in your home currency instead of won, decline. That option adds 3–7% — see paying by card in Korea.

    5. Claiming at the airport

Incheon Airport’s published order of operations is: shop → check in and declare at customs → kiosk → customs desk (if required) → refund counter (Incheon International Airport).

Do the refund before you clear security, if you are carrying claimable goods that customs may want to inspect. Once you are airside with your bags checked, you cannot show the items.

    Where the counters are:

    Location Counter hours Self-service kiosk
    Terminal 1 — duty-free area, 3F, near Gate 28 07:00–22:00 24 hours
    Terminal 2 — duty-free area, 3F, opposite Gate 250 and near Gate 253 07:00–21:30 24 hours
Concourse — 3F, next to the central pharmacy 24 hours

If your flight departs outside counter hours, the kiosks run around the clock. Give yourself extra time — this happens after check-in, and a queue on a busy departure morning is not something you want to discover with forty minutes to boarding.

    6. Why claims fail

The common failures are not about the amount.

    • Passport left at the hotel. No passport, no refund, and you cannot go back and add it later.
    • Asked after paying. The moment matters. Say it before the card goes in.
    • Items already used or opened. Especially cosmetics and food.
    • The 3-month window expired. Long trips or repeat entries can quietly run past it.
    • Resident status. If you have been in Korea long enough to count as a resident, visa type does not save you.
    • Receipts split too small. Two ₩9,000 receipts at the same store do not combine into ₩18,000.
    • Arrived at the airport too late. The counter closes; the queue does not care about your boarding time.

    7. Quick checklist

    • Physical passport with you when shopping, not a photo
    • ₩15,000 or more on a single receipt at a single store
    • Say “tax refund” before paying
    • Leave claimable items sealed and unused
    • Depart within 3 months of purchase
    • In Korea less than 6 months total
    • Claiming at the airport? Do it before security, and arrive early

    PART 2 — 한국어

“Korea tax refund”
