  • Send Your Suitcase to the Airport Instead of Dragging It There

This guide is written in two parts. English first, Korean below.

    PART 1 — ENGLISH

Departure day usually goes like this. Check out at 11am, flight at 8pm, and nine hours to fill while towing everything you own through a subway system.

There is a service that removes this, and almost no English guide mentions it: the staffed luggage desks in Seoul subway stations will ship your bag to Incheon Airport instead of holding it for you. You hand it over in the morning and next see it at the airport.

Here is how it works, what it costs, and where it does not fit.

    1. What the service is

The subway operator’s luggage desks — T-Luggage — do two separate things. Storage is the one people know: leave a bag, come back for it.

Delivery is the other. Rather than returning to collect, you nominate a destination and the bag goes there. The two routes that matter to a visitor are:

    • Station → Incheon Airport, for departure day
    • Station → station, for moving between accommodation

The counters sit at six stations: Hongik Univ., Seoul Station, Myeongdong, Gimpo Airport, Jongno 3-ga and Jamsil, open 09:00–22:00 (T-Luggage).

    2. What it costs

Station to Incheon Airport, by case size:

    Size Weekday Weekend
    Small (up to 20″) ₩20,000 ₩29,000
    Medium (20–23″) ₩26,000 ₩38,000
    Large (24–27″) ₩31,000 ₩45,000

Weekends cost 45–50% more. That is a real gap, and departure days often fall on weekends, so check it against your dates rather than assuming the weekday figure.

Compare it to the alternative honestly. A taxi to Incheon runs around ₩60,000–70,000 and takes your bags with you. The Airport Railroad is far cheaper but you carry everything. Shipping one large case on a weekday, at ₩31,000, sits between them — you still travel cheaply, without the luggage.

For two people with two cases it stops being obviously worth it. For one person with one big case and a long gap to fill, it usually is.

    3. The timing, which is the part that decides it

Same-day airport delivery requires dropping the bag off by around 11:30 in the morning [reported]. Miss that and you are storing, not shipping.

That cut-off lines up almost exactly with hotel checkout, which is either convenient or very inconvenient depending on where you are staying. If your accommodation is not near one of the six counter stations, the morning becomes: check out, travel to a counter with your bags, hand over, then start your day.

So the honest test is: are you already passing one of those six stations in the morning? If yes, this is close to free convenience. If not, the trip to the counter may cost you the time you were trying to save.

    4. What you need, and what you should check

To hand a bag over you fill in a short form with basic personal details and receive a handover slip. Keep it — collecting without it means identity verification instead.

Before you commit, confirm these at the counter, because they change and the published detail is thin:

    • Which terminal the delivery goes to. Incheon has T1 and T2 and they are twenty minutes apart. Check your flight’s terminal against the service’s
    • Where at the airport you collect it, and the collection desk’s hours against your flight time
    • The actual cut-off for your travel date

That last one matters most. Do not build a departure day around a cut-off you read in a blog post — including this one. Ask when you drop off, or the day before.

    5. When to use storage instead

Delivery is for the day you leave. Storage is for everything else, and it is much cheaper — subway lockers start around ₩2,200 for four hours, and the staffed desk from ₩3,000.

Use storage when you have a gap between checkout and a train, or want to shop unencumbered for an afternoon. Use delivery only when the bag’s next stop is genuinely the airport.

Both, with prices and the locker alternative that avoids the queue, are in our luggage storage guide.

    6. Why this is worth knowing at all

Because the alternative is worse than people expect. Moving a checked-size case around Seoul means the transfer corridors — up to 414 metres at Hongik Univ. — and it rules out ordinary city buses entirely, since their carry-on limit is 50 × 40 × 20 cm.

A departure day with luggage is not the same city as a departure day without it. That is what the fee buys.

Details on both constraints are in taking luggage on Seoul transport.

    7. Before you go

    • Subway luggage desks ship to Incheon Airport, not just store
    • Six counter stations: Hongik Univ., Seoul Station, Myeongdong, Gimpo Airport, Jongno 3-ga, Jamsil
    • Open 09:00–22:00
    • Station → Incheon: ₩20,000–31,000 on weekdays, ₩29,000–45,000 at weekends
    • Same-day delivery needs a drop-off by about 11:30am [reported] — confirm for your date
    • Check which terminal the service delivers to against your flight
    • Keep the handover slip
    • For a gap that ends anywhere but the airport, storage is far cheaper

  • Taking a Suitcase on the Seoul Subway: What Actually Makes It Hard

This guide is written in two parts. English first, Korean below.

    PART 1 — ENGLISH

Search this and you get the same reassurance everywhere: yes, you can take luggage on the Seoul subway, there is no rule against it.

That is true and it is not the useful answer. There is no size limit. The difficulty is not the rule — it is the building.

Three things actually cost you on the subway: ticket gates, transfer distances, and rush hour. And there is one mode — the ordinary city bus — where a real size limit does apply. Here is what to do about each.

    1. The gate is the first problem

Standard ticket gates in Seoul are narrow — sized for a person, not a person plus a hard case beside them. Pushing a large suitcase through the standard gate means lifting it, angling it, or holding up the queue behind you.

Use the wide gate instead. Every station has at least one, marked for wheelchairs, prams and mobility-impaired passengers. Luggage is a legitimate use — it is the same gate, it just opens wider.

It is usually at the end of the row of gates, often beside the staffed booth, and marked with a wheelchair symbol. You tap your card exactly the same way.

This one change removes most of the friction people describe at gates.

    2. Distance, not stairs, is what tires you

Seoul stations are large, and transfers can be long. The one that catches travellers hardest is at Hongik Univ. Station, where the Line 2 ↔ Airport Railroad transfer is 355 metres — and that is the station most visitors arrive at from the airport.

    Station Transfer Distance
    Hongik Univ. Line 2 ↔ Gyeongui-Jungang 414 m
    Seoul Station Line 1 ↔ AREX 365 m
    Hongik Univ. Line 2 ↔ AREX 355 m
    Express Bus Terminal Line 7 ↔ Line 9 314 m
    Jongno 3-ga Line 1 ↔ Line 5 312 m

Check the number of transfers before you check the total journey time. A route that is five minutes faster but adds a transfer is usually slower with a suitcase, and considerably less pleasant.

Naver Map will show you the route options; picking the one with fewer changes is a decision the app will not make for you.

    3. Lifts exist, but not everywhere you want them

Every station has at least one lift. The catch is that older stations may have only one, positioned at one specific exit — not necessarily the exit you want.

What this means in practice: you can almost always get from platform to street without stairs, but you may come out several hundred metres from where you intended.

Escalators are more widespread than lifts but often run in one direction only, and that direction changes by time of day.

A moving walkway inside a Seoul subway station with passengers walking along it.
Moving walkways cover some of the longest passages. They are worth looking for — but like escalators, they usually run one way.

If stairs are genuinely not an option for you, plan the route in advance rather than improvising at the platform. Seoul Metro publishes station-by-station facility data — lifts, escalators, moving walkways, wheelchair lifts — through the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s accessibility pages.

    4. Rush hour is a real constraint

There is no rule barring luggage at any hour. There is, however, a practical reality: on Line 2 between roughly 08:00–09:30 and 18:00–19:30, carriages fill to the point where a large suitcase is genuinely difficult to place and genuinely unwelcome.

This is not about etiquette lectures. It is that you will spend the journey holding a case upright in a crowd, and that is a bad twenty minutes.

Shift by an hour if you can. If you cannot, stand in the space beside the doors at the carriage ends rather than mid-carriage, and keep the case in front of you rather than beside you.

    5. What is actually banned

One rule did change recently, and it is worth knowing because it catches people out.

Since July 1, 2026, Seoul Metro prohibits lithium batteries above 160Wh and personal mobility devices — e-scooters, e-bikes, electric skateboards, electric unicycles — from stations and trains (Seoul Metro, via Wikitree).

Ordinary luggage is not affected. Neither are phones, tablets or normal power banks, which sit well under the threshold. Wheelchairs and mobility aids are exempt.

If you were planning to bring a rented e-scooter into a station, that is the thing that changed.

    6. The one mode that really does restrict you

Everything above is about the subway, where no size limit applies. City buses are different, and this catches people out.

Seoul’s city bus terms of carriage cap a passenger’s carry-on at under 20 kg and within 50 × 40 × 20 cm — roughly a 17–18 inch cabin bag. A checked-size suitcase is over the limit, and a driver may refuse to let you board. It has happened often enough to generate complaints in the Korean press.

Enforcement is at the driver’s discretion and varies with how full the bus is, so plenty of people board with larger cases without incident. But you cannot rely on it, and being turned away at the door with a bus queue behind you is a bad way to find out.

    What this means in practice:

    Mode Large suitcase
    Subway No size limit
Airport bus Fine — it has a luggage hold underneath
City bus Over 50 × 40 × 20 cm is above the stated limit
    Taxi Fine

So the answer to “how am I supposed to get around with a suitcase” is: subway, airport bus, or taxi. The ordinary city bus is the one mode where a full-size case is a genuine problem, and it is also the one most guides never mention.

Airport buses are a different service with under-floor luggage compartments — see our airport transfer guide.

    7. The alternative: do not carry it

The strongest move is often not to solve the luggage problem but to remove it.

Storage — subway lockers take app bookings and start around ₩2,200 for four hours. Staffed desks cost more but take oversized cases.

Delivery — the staffed T-Luggage desks will send your bag to another subway station or to Incheon Airport rather than holding it for pickup. On a departure day this can mean never touching your suitcase between the hotel and the airport.

Both are covered in our luggage storage guide.

    8. Before you go

    • There is no size limit on luggage in the Seoul subway
    • Use the wide gate at the end of the gate row — it is the single biggest improvement
    • Count transfers, not just minutes. Fewer changes beats a faster route
    • The Hongik Univ. transfer runs 355–414 m depending on the line — plan for it if arriving from the airport
    • Every station has a lift, but older ones have only one, at one exit
    • Avoid Line 2 at 08:00–09:30 and 18:00–19:30 if you can
    • Stand beside the doors at carriage ends, case in front of you
    • Lithium batteries over 160Wh and e-scooters are banned since July 2026 — ordinary luggage is fine
    • City buses cap carry-on at 50 × 40 × 20 cm — a checked-size case is over it. Subway, airport bus and taxi are fine
    • Consider storing or shipping the bag instead of moving it

  • Luggage Storage in Hongdae: Four Options, and Your Suitcase Decides

This guide is written in two parts. English first, Korean below.

    PART 1 — ENGLISH

Walk past the staffed luggage desk at Hongik Univ. Station on a weekend afternoon and there is a queue — travellers with large suitcases, waiting their turn.

That queue is not a mistake. Most of those cases genuinely will not fit a coin locker, and the desk is the right place for them. But it is not the only option here, and if your bag is smaller you have faster ones.

There are four kinds of storage around this station at different prices. What decides your choice is the size of what you are carrying.

Three travellers pulling wheeled suitcases along a corridor inside Hongik Univ. Station, seen from behind.
This is what the four options are for. Which one you want comes down to whether your case fits a locker — and the overhead signs here are the same ones that will point you to storage.

    1. Why there is a queue

The staffed desk is one counter serving everyone, and it is the option that handles oversized suitcases — the ones lockers cannot take. So it draws exactly the travellers who have no alternative.

The T-Luggage staffed storage desk inside Hongik Univ. Station, with STORAGE and DELIVERY signage in English and two large suitcases parked at the counter.
The staffed desk at Hongik Univ. Station. The cases parked at the counter are exactly the size no coin locker takes — and the queue posts are permanent fixtures. Look for the words STORAGE and DELIVERY; the signage is in English.

Demand is real and it is uneven. Expect a wait on weekends and at peak hours; the same counter can be quiet on a weekday morning.

If your bag fits a locker, you can book one in the same station through an app and walk straight to it. If it does not, the desk is where you belong — go early or off-peak.

    2. The four options

T-Locker (또타라커) — subway lockers, book by app

Automated lockers across the Seoul subway. Roughly 5,500 lockers at 269 stations, so there are several at a busy station like this one.

    Weekday rate, 4 hours:

Size Dimensions 4 hours Each extra hour
    Small 50 × 30 × 60 cm ₩2,200 ₩500
    Medium 50 × 45 × 60 cm ₩3,300 ₩800
    Large 50 × 90 × 60 cm ₩4,400 ₩1,000

This is the cheapest option and it takes reservations. Install the T-Locker app, check availability, book, and go straight to the locker. No queue.

The catch is size — a large locker fits a big suitcase, but large lockers are the first to fill on a busy day. Book ahead if you can.

T-Luggage (또타러기지) — the staffed desk

The counter people queue at. It operates at six stations — Hongik Univ., Seoul Station, Myeongdong, Gimpo Airport, Jongno 3-ga and Jamsil — daily from 09:00 to 22:00 (T-Luggage official). The Hongik Univ. desk sits on B1, on the connecting passage toward the Airport Railroad.

Weekday rate, 4 hours, priced by suitcase size:

Size 4 hours Each extra hour
    S (up to 20″) ₩3,000 ₩1,000
    M (20–23″) ₩4,000 ₩1,000
    L (23–27″) ₩6,000 ₩1,000
    XL (27″+) ₩9,000 ₩1,000

Weekends cost more — noticeably more. The same four hours runs roughly ₩4,000 to ₩13,000 at weekend rates, a 30–50% premium over the weekday figures above. That is the same time you are most likely to meet a queue.

The desk also runs a delivery service: instead of collecting your bag later, you can have it sent to another subway station or to Incheon Airport. If you are flying out and do not want to come back for it, this is the thing to ask about.

More expensive than lockers, but with real advantages: no size limit that a locker imposes, staff on hand, and signage in English, Chinese and Japanese (Seoul Metropolitan Government).

Worth the queue if your suitcase is oversized or you want a person to hand it to. Not worth it for a backpack.

    Private storage counters

Independent operators sit around the station exits. Luggage Q, for example, is about a minute from Exit 7, open 24 hours, charges around ₩1,000 per hour, takes cards, and requires no reservation.

The 24-hour part matters. Subway lockers and the staffed desk are bound by station hours; a late flight or a night out is where these earn their keep.

    Shop-based storage (LugStay and similar)

Instead of a locker, your bag sits behind the counter of a partner café, restaurant or salon. You book through an app and drop it off.

The advantage is location — you can often find one closer to where you actually are than the station is. The constraint is opening hours: if the shop closes at 8pm, your bag is in there until tomorrow. Check before you book.

    3. Choosing

    Your situation Take
Backpack or small bag, few hours T-Locker — cheapest, bookable
Large suitcase, want no fuss T-Luggage desk — go off-peak if you can
Oversized case a locker will not fit T-Luggage desk
Picking up late at night Private 24-hour counter
Staying near Hongdae, not at the station Shop-based app — check closing time
You hate queues, bag fits a locker Book a T-Locker before you arrive

    4. Before you go

    • If your bag fits a locker, you can skip the queue. Lockers in the same station take app bookings
    • If it does not, the desk is the right choice — just go on a weekday or off-peak
    • T-Locker is cheapest — from ₩2,200 for four hours
    • Large lockers fill first. Book ahead on weekends
    • The staffed desk costs more but has no locker-size limit and multilingual signage
    • Private counters run 24 hours — the only option for late pickups
    • Shop-based storage closes when the shop does. Check the hours before booking
    • Rates above are weekday, 4-hour baselines. Longer stays add hourly
    • Weekend rates run 30–50% higher at the staffed desk — budget for it
    • The desk can deliver your bag to Incheon Airport instead of holding it for pickup
    • Staffed desk hours: 09:00–22:00, six stations citywide

  • Incheon and Gimpo to Central Seoul: Which Option, and What If You Land at 1am

This guide is written in two parts. English first, Korean below.

    PART 1 — ENGLISH

Most guides tell you the airport train takes 40 minutes and costs ₩9,500, then stop.

That is fine if you land at 2pm with a carry-on. It is useless if you land at 1am, or with two large suitcases, or heading somewhere the train does not go.

Here is the decision as it actually presents itself, including the gap between the last train and the first one — the part nobody covers.

    1. From Incheon: the three options

    Time Fare Arrives at
AREX Express ~40 min ₩9,500 Seoul Station only, non-stop
AREX All-stop ~60 min ₩4,150–4,750 Seoul Station, stopping en route
Airport bus 60–80 min ₩5,000–15,000 Neighbourhoods across Seoul
Taxi 60–100 min ₩47,000–55,000 + toll Door to door

Figures from Seoul’s official tourism site.

The train ends at Seoul Station. If your hotel is near there or on subway lines 1 or 4, this is the obvious choice. The express is non-stop; the all-stop version is half the price and twenty minutes slower.

The bus goes where the train does not — Gangnam, Jamsil, Myeongdong, Sinchon and many other districts, dropping you closer to your hotel. Slower and traffic-dependent, but often no subway transfer at the other end. Pay by cash, T-money card, or credit card.

Taxis run ₩47,000–55,000 to central areas, plus a ₩7,900 expressway toll that catches people out. Four types serve the airport: standard, International (20% premium, English-speaking driver), Deluxe (40–50% more), and Jumbo vans for up to 8 people.

    2. Which one, honestly

    • Hotel near Seoul Station, light luggage → AREX express
    • Watching the budget, not in a hurry → AREX all-stop, half the price
    • Hotel in Gangnam, Jamsil, Myeongdong, Sinchon → airport bus, likely no transfer
    • Two or more large suitcases → airport bus or taxi. Dragging cases through Seoul Station transfers is worse than it sounds
    • Three or more people → taxi becomes competitive. Split four ways, ₩50,000 is close to four bus fares
    • Arriving between midnight and 4am → see below
A traveller with a backpack hauling a large hard-shell suitcase up a flight of stairs in a Seoul subway station, seen from behind.
This is what “worse than it sounds” looks like. Transfers involve stairs, and stairs with two large cases is the part that turns a cheap route into a bad hour.

One thing to keep straight: an airport bus is not a city bus. Airport buses have under-floor luggage holds and are built for exactly this. Ordinary Seoul city buses cap carry-on at 50 × 40 × 20 cm, which a checked-size suitcase exceeds — a driver may refuse to let you board. Once you are in the city, move a large case by subway or taxi, not by local bus. More on that in taking luggage on Seoul transport.

    3. Landing late: the gap nobody mentions

Regular airport buses run roughly 04:00–06:00 first departure to 22:00–23:00 last. The train stops too. So if you land at 1am, the standard advice does not apply.

Incheon runs night buses for exactly this window (Incheon International Airport):

Route To From airport Fare (adult)
    N6000 Gangnam Express Bus Terminal 00:10–04:20 ₩17,000
    N6002 Cheongnyangni 00:00–04:40 ₩18,000
    N6701 Dongdaemun Design Plaza 23:50–04:40 ₩18,000
N6703 Gwangnaru Station 23:40–04:50 varies by stop

    Boarding points at Terminal 1: stop 6A for N6000 and N6002, stop 3B for N6701 and N6703.

Two things worth knowing. Night fares are roughly double the daytime bus — ₩17,000–18,000 against ₩5,000–15,000. And they drop you at a transport hub, not your door; at 3am the subway is closed, so budget for a short taxi at the other end.

If your arrival falls in the narrow window when even night buses have stopped, a taxi is the only option, and the meter runs higher at night.

    4. From Gimpo: easier, and often overlooked

Gimpo is much closer to the city, and its station is a hub on five lines: Subway 5, Subway 9, AREX, Gimpo Gold Line, and the Seohae Line.

That means you can usually reach your destination with one transfer or none, and the fare is ordinary subway pricing rather than an airport premium. Seoul Station is about 22 minutes away by rail.

If you have a choice of airports when booking, Gimpo saves both time and money on the transfer into the city.

One caution: moving between Gimpo’s domestic and international terminals takes about 20 minutes. Factor that in if you are connecting.

    5. Before you land

    • Check where your hotel actually is — near Seoul Station favours the train, elsewhere often favours the bus
    • AREX all-stop is half the price of the express for twenty extra minutes
    • Taxi fares exclude the ₩7,900 expressway toll
    • Landing after midnight? Night buses N6000/N6002/N6701/N6703 run until roughly 04:40, at about double the daytime fare
    • Night bus stops at Terminal 1: 6A and 3B
    • Heavy luggage or three-plus people shifts the maths toward bus or taxi
    • Flying into Gimpo instead? Five subway lines, roughly 22 minutes to Seoul Station
