  • Olive Young near Hongik Univ. Station: Which of the 4 Stores Should You Visit?

    This guide is written in two parts. English first, Korean below. 이 글은 두 파트로 되어 있습니다. 영문이 먼저, 한국어가 아래에 있습니다.

    PART 1 — ENGLISH

    If you search “Olive Young Hongdae,” you will find several stores within walking distance of Hongik Univ. Station. They are not all the same size, they do not all close at the same time, and only one of them is officially designated as a store for international visitors.

    This guide covers all four locations around the station, how the tax refund actually works (the minimum amount is lower than most English travel blogs still say), and what to check before you go.

    1. Which store should you go to?

    All four stores carry the core Olive Young range, so the choice comes down to size, hours, and whether you want tourist-oriented services.

    Arriving with a suitcase? Leave it at the station first — there are four storage options around Hongik Univ. Station and the cheapest one takes app bookings, so you can skip the queue.

    If you only visit one, choose Hongdae Town. It is the store in this area that sits in the smaller group of 14 running partner and payment-linked promotions, inside the wider Global Tourism Zone network of roughly 110 stores (Olive Young Newsroom). Those two numbers get mixed up constantly — what the label actually gets you is a separate story. It also runs both immediate and airport-style tax refunds.

    Note that Hongdae Intersection closes 30 minutes earlier than the others (확인요망). If you are shopping late, that is the one to avoid.

    Check hours on the day you go. Opening hours change on public holidays and during events, and stores stop admitting customers shortly before closing time. The Olive Young app or official website will have the current hours.

    3. How the tax refund works

    This is where most English-language guides are out of date.

    The minimum purchase is 15,000 KRW — not 30,000 KRW. Korea lowered the threshold from 30,000 to 15,000 won effective January 1, 2024 (Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism / Korea.net, Nov 2023). Many travel blogs still quote the old figure.

    The same reform doubled the refund ceilings:

    How to claim it in store:

    1. Bring your passport — a photo or copy is not accepted.
    2. Tell the cashier “tax refund” before paying.
    3. The 10% VAT is deducted on the spot, so you pay the reduced price immediately.

    If your purchase goes over the per-transaction ceiling, the amount above it is handled as a refund at the airport instead of at the register. Keep your receipts either way.

    4. Payment and discounts

    International cards are accepted, including Visa and Mastercard issued overseas. Your own bank may add a foreign transaction fee and use its own exchange rate.

    At the 14 promotion stores — which in this area means Hongdae Town only — Olive Young periodically runs extra discounts tied to payment methods aimed at international visitors: Alipay, WeChat Pay, UnionPay, and WOWPASS. Past rounds have offered anything from a flat discount on small purchases to 10% back on larger ones, with each payment method running on its own schedule.

    These campaigns rotate every few weeks and expire. There is no permanent rate to plan around, and a discount you read about in a blog post has likely ended. Ask at the register, or look for the current campaign signage when you arrive — this is also something the in-store kiosk can answer (see the next section).

    For store-wide sales, Olive Young runs its major seasonal sale (올영세일) four times a year, roughly at the start of each season, plus a smaller promotion at the end of each month. Exact dates are announced shortly before each sale rather than published a year ahead, so check the app rather than a “2026 sale calendar” post — those circulating online are estimates made by fans, not official schedules.

    One thing to be aware of: Olive Young Global (global.oliveyoung.com) is the international online shop. Its membership tiers and coupons explicitly do not apply in Olive Young’s physical stores in Korea, so a Global account will not get you a discount at the Hongdae registers.

    5. Shopping without Korean

    You do not need to speak Korean, and as of this summer you do not necessarily need to find an English-speaking staff member either.

    In July 2026, Olive Young began rolling out an AI Shopping Assistant kiosk that lets you talk to an AI avatar and shop on your own (CJ Newsroom, July 8, 2026). It handles:

    • product explanations and recommendations based on your skin type or preferences
    • stock checks
    • finding where an item sits inside the store
    • routine questions like payment methods and VAT refunds

    The kiosk works in 8 languages. For anything that needs a human, staff use an AI interpretation service covering 38 languages, via a QR-code chat or voice through a tablet, trained on K-beauty terminology so product names and ingredients come through correctly.

    Do not expect the kiosk in Hongdae yet. The initial rollout covers three Seoul stores only — Dongdaemun History & Culture Park Station, Apgujeong Jungang, and Ewha Jungang (Aju Press). None of them is in this area. Olive Young says it will expand nationwide but has not published a schedule.

    The staff-assisted interpretation service is a separate system and appears to be more widely deployed, but Olive Young has not confirmed which stores have it.     6. Before you go — quick checklist

    • Passport in your bag, not a photo of it
    • Purchase total of 15,000 KRW or more if you want the tax refund
    • Say “tax refund” to the cashier before paying
    • Heading out late? Hongdae Intersection closes at 22:30 (확인요망), the rest at 23:00
    • Want the biggest store and tourist promotions? Hongdae Town
    • Worried about Korean? The AI kiosk is not in Hongdae yet — ask staff for interpretation instead
    • Check today’s hours in the app — holidays and events change them

    PART 2 — 한국어

    “올리브영 홍대”를 검색하면 홍대입구역 도보권에 여러 매장이 나옵니다. 규모도 다르고 닫는 시간도 다르며, 외국인 관광객 대상 매장으로 지정된 곳은 그중 한 곳뿐입니다.

    이 글에서는 홍대입구역 인근 네 곳을 모두 정리하고, 택스리펀드 실제 기준(영어권 여행 정보 대부분이 아직 옛 기준을 쓰고 있습니다)과 방문 전 확인할 점을 안내합니다.

    1. 어느 지점으로 갈까

    네 곳 모두 올리브영 기본 상품군을 갖추고 있어서, 선택 기준은 규모·영업시간·관광객 대상 서비스 여부입니다.

    캐리어를 들고 왔다면 역에 먼저 맡기세요. 홍대입구역 주변에 보관 방법이 네 가지 있고, 가장 저렴한 쪽은 앱 예약이 돼서 줄을 서지 않아도 됩니다.

    한 곳만 간다면 홍대 타운을 권합니다. 이 지역에서 제휴·결제 연계 행사가 열리는 14개 매장 중 한 곳입니다. 그보다 넓은 글로벌관광상권 지정 매장은 전국 약 110개이고, 14개는 그 안의 일부입니다(올리브영 뉴스룸). 이 두 숫자가 자주 뒤섞이는데, 지정이 실제로 무엇을 주는지는 따로 정리했습니다. 즉시환급과 사후환급을 함께 운영합니다.

    방문 당일에 영업시간을 확인하세요. 공휴일과 행사 기간에 변동이 있고, 마감 직전에는 입장이 마감됩니다. 올리브영 앱이나 공식 홈페이지에서 당일 기준을 확인할 수 있습니다.

    3. 택스리펀드 받는 법

    영어권 안내가 가장 많이 틀리는 부분입니다.

    최소 구매액은 3만원이 아니라 1만 5천원입니다. 2024년 1월 1일부터 기준액이 3만원에서 1만 5천원으로 낮아졌습니다(문화체육관광부 코리아넷, 2023년 11월). 여행 정보 사이트 상당수가 아직 옛 기준을 싣고 있습니다.

    같은 개정으로 환급 한도도 두 배가 됐습니다.

    매장에서 받는 방법

    1. 여권을 지참합니다. 사진이나 사본은 인정되지 않습니다.
    2. 계산 전에 직원에게 택스리펀드를 요청합니다.
    3. 부가세 10%가 그 자리에서 차감되어 할인된 금액만 결제합니다.

    1회 한도를 넘는 금액은 매장에서 즉시 환급되지 않고 출국 시 공항에서 처리합니다. 어느 쪽이든 영수증은 보관하세요.

    자격 조건, 3개월 반출 기한, 인천공항에서 받는 절차까지 전체 규칙은 한국 택스리펀드 2026: 최소 금액은 3만원이 아니라 1만 5천원에 정리했습니다.

    4. 결제와 할인

    해외 발급 카드로 결제할 수 있습니다. 해외 사용이 가능한 비자·마스터카드가 여기 해당하며, 카드사에 따라 해외 이용 수수료와 자체 환율이 적용됩니다.

    행사 대상 14개 매장(이 지역에서는 홍대 타운)에서는 외국인이 주로 쓰는 결제 수단과 연계한 추가 할인을 수시로 진행합니다. 알리페이·위챗페이·유니온페이·와우패스가 여기 해당하며, 지난 행사들을 보면 소액 구매 시 정액 할인부터 고액 구매 시 10% 환급까지 결제 수단별로 조건이 제각각이었습니다.

    이런 행사는 몇 주 단위로 바뀌고 종료됩니다. 고정된 할인율이 있는 것이 아니어서, 블로그에서 본 조건은 이미 끝났을 가능성이 큽니다. 방문 시점에 매장 안내물을 확인하거나 계산대에서 물어보는 편이 확실합니다. 뒤에 설명할 매장 내 키오스크로도 확인할 수 있습니다.

    상시 할인으로는 대규모 세일인 올영세일이 계절이 바뀔 무렵 연 4회 열리고, 매월 말에는 규모가 작은 행사가 있습니다. 정확한 날짜는 세일 직전에 공지되며 연간 일정으로 미리 공개되지 않습니다. 온라인에 도는 “2026년 세일 총정리” 게시물은 대부분 이용자들이 예년 기준으로 추정한 날짜이므로, 앱에서 확인하는 편이 정확합니다.

    한 가지 주의할 점이 있습니다. 올리브영 글로벌(global.oliveyoung.com)은 해외 배송 전용 온라인 몰입니다. 이곳의 멤버십 등급과 쿠폰은 약관상 한국 내 오프라인 매장에 적용되지 않으므로, 글로벌 계정이 있어도 홍대 매장 계산대에서는 할인되지 않습니다.

    5. 한국어를 못해도 되는 이유

    한국어를 몰라도 쇼핑할 수 있고, 올여름부터는 영어가 되는 직원을 찾아다닐 필요도 줄었습니다.

    2026년 7월부터 올리브영이 AI 쇼핑 어시스턴트 키오스크를 순차 도입하고 있습니다. AI 아바타와 대화하며 직원 도움 없이 쇼핑할 수 있는 서비스입니다(CJ 뉴스룸, 2026년 7월 8일). 지원하는 기능은 다음과 같습니다.

    • 피부 특성이나 취향에 맞춘 상품 설명과 추천
    • 재고 조회
    • 매장 안에서 그 상품이 어디 있는지 안내
    • 결제 방법, 부가세 환급처럼 자주 나오는 문의

    키오스크는 8개 국어로 운영됩니다. 사람이 필요한 상담은 직원이 38개 언어를 지원하는 AI 통역 서비스로 돕습니다. QR 스캔 채팅이나 태블릿 음성 대화로 이용하며, K뷰티 전문용어를 학습해 성분명이나 제품명이 정확히 전달됩니다.

    다만 홍대에는 아직 없습니다. 초기 도입은 서울 세 곳 — 동대문역사문화공원역점, 압구정중앙점, 이화중앙점 — 뿐이며(아주프레스) 이 지역은 포함되지 않았습니다. 전국 확대 계획은 밝혔지만 일정은 공개되지 않았습니다.

    직원이 쓰는 통역 서비스는 키오스크와 별개 시스템이고 더 넓게 배포된 것으로 보이지만, 어느 매장에 있는지는 확인되지 않았습니다. 언어가 걱정된다면 직원에게 물어보세요 — 키오스크가 없는 매장에서도 통역을 꺼내 줄 수 있습니다. 키오스크로 실제 무엇을 할 수 있는지는 AI 키오스크 안내에 정리했습니다.

    6. 방문 전 체크리스트

    PART 1 — ENGLISH

    Search “Korea tax refund” and nearly every English guide tells you the same thing: you need to spend at least ₩30,000 in one store to claim VAT back.

    That figure has been wrong since January 2024.

    The threshold is ₩15,000. If you have been walking past smaller purchases because you assumed they did not qualify, you have been leaving money on the counter. This guide covers the current rules, who actually qualifies (there are conditions most guides skip entirely), and how to claim at the register or at the airport.

    1. The minimum is ₩15,000, not ₩30,000

    Korea halved the threshold from ₩30,000 to ₩15,000 effective January 1, 2024 (Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism / Korea.net). Incheon Airport’s own refund guidance also states ₩15,000 as the qualifying amount (Incheon International Airport).

    The same reform doubled both refund ceilings:

    Why do so many guides still say ₩30,000? Most were written before 2024 and never updated. Travel content ages badly, and a number buried in the middle of a long guide is rarely revisited.

    The practical effect: a ₩18,000 skincare purchase now qualifies. So does a ₩16,000 souvenir. Those add up over a trip.

    2. Do you actually qualify?

    Most English guides stop at the amount. But the amount is only one of four conditions, and travelers get caught out by the other three.

    You qualify if all of these are true:

    • You are a non-resident foreign national. The regulation defines eligible visitors as “non-residents” under the Foreign Exchange Transactions Act (외국인관광객 등에 대한 부가가치세 및 개별소비세 특례규정, Art. 2). In practice this is commonly applied as less than 6 months in Korea, which is why long-stay students and workers usually do not qualify. Note that the six-month figure comes from how non-residency is determined, not from the refund regulation itself — if you are near that line, ask the store or customs rather than assuming.
    • You spend at least ₩15,000 in a single store on a single receipt. You cannot combine two ₩8,000 receipts.
    • You leave Korea within 3 months of the purchase. This one is written directly into the regulation (Art. 6(1)(1)): the goods must be confirmed as taken out of the country within three months of purchase. Buy something in March and fly out in July and the claim is dead.
    • The goods are unused and unopened. Incheon Airport’s guidance is explicit that customs verification applies to unopened, unused items.

    That last one deserves emphasis. If you buy a cosmetic product and start using it during your trip, you may not be able to claim it at the airport. Keep anything you intend to claim sealed until you have left the country.

    3. Immediate refund vs. airport refund

    There are two routes, and which one applies is mostly decided for you by the amount.

    Immediate refund (즉시환급) — the VAT is deducted at the register, so you simply pay less. Nothing to do at the airport. This is capped at ₩1,000,000 per transaction and ₩5,000,000 across your whole stay.

    Airport refund — you pay the full price in store, receive refund paperwork, and claim before departure. This is the route for purchases above the immediate-refund ceiling, and for stores that do not offer instant refunds.

    Immediate refund is almost always better where available: no paperwork, no queue on departure day, no risk of missing the counter because your flight was early. If a store offers it, take it.

    Not every shop participates. Look for tax refund signage, or simply ask at the register.

    4. Claiming at the register

    1. Bring your passport. A photo or photocopy is not accepted — staff need the physical document.
    2. Say “tax refund” before you pay, not after. Once the transaction is closed it usually cannot be reversed.
    3. The 10% VAT is deducted on the spot and you pay the reduced amount.
    4. Keep the receipt anyway. If any part of the purchase exceeds the per-transaction ceiling, the remainder is handled at the airport.

    That is the entire process. It adds maybe thirty seconds at checkout.

    While you are at the terminal: if it offers to charge you in your home currency instead of won, decline. That option adds 3–7% — see paying by card in Korea.

    5. Claiming at the airport

    Incheon Airport’s published order of operations is: shop → check in and declare at customs → kiosk → customs desk (if required) → refund counter (Incheon International Airport).

    Do the refund before you clear security, if you are carrying claimable goods that customs may want to inspect. Once you are airside with your bags checked, you cannot show the items.

    Where the counters are:

    If your flight departs outside counter hours, the kiosks run around the clock. Give yourself extra time — this happens after check-in, and a queue on a busy departure morning is not something you want to discover with forty minutes to boarding.

    6. Why claims fail

    The common failures are not about the amount.

    • Passport left at the hotel. No passport, no refund, and you cannot go back and add it later.
    • Asked after paying. The moment matters. Say it before the card goes in.
    • Items already used or opened. Especially cosmetics and food.
    • The 3-month window expired. Long trips or repeat entries can quietly run past it.
    • Resident status. If you have been in Korea long enough to count as a resident, visa type does not save you.
    • Receipts split too small. Two ₩9,000 receipts at the same store do not combine into ₩18,000.
    • Arrived at the airport too late. The counter closes; the queue does not care about your boarding time.

    7. Quick checklist

    • Physical passport with you when shopping, not a photo
    • ₩15,000 or more on a single receipt at a single store
    • Say “tax refund” before paying
    • Leave claimable items sealed and unused
    • Depart within 3 months of purchase
    • In Korea less than 6 months total
    • Claiming at the airport? Do it before security, and arrive early

    PART 2 — 한국어

    “Korea tax refund”를 검색하면 영문 가이드 대부분이 같은 말을 합니다. 한 매장에서 3만원 이상 사야 부가세를 돌려받을 수 있다고요.

    그 숫자는 2024년 1월부터 틀렸습니다.

    기준은 1만 5천원입니다. 금액이 안 될 거라 생각해 그냥 지나친 구매가 있었다면 받을 수 있는 돈을 두고 온 셈입니다. 이 글에서는 현행 기준과 자격 조건(영문 가이드가 대부분 건너뛰는 부분), 그리고 매장과 공항에서 받는 방법을 정리합니다.

    1. 최소 금액은 3만원이 아니라 1만 5천원

    왜 아직도 3만원이라고 쓰는 곳이 많을까요. 대부분 2024년 이전에 작성된 뒤 갱신되지 않았기 때문입니다. 여행 정보는 빠르게 낡는데, 긴 글 중간에 묻힌 숫자는 다시 들여다보는 일이 드뭅니다.

    실질적인 차이는 이렇습니다. 1만 8천원짜리 화장품도, 1만 6천원짜리 기념품도 이제 대상입니다. 여행 내내 쌓이면 적지 않습니다.

    2. 나는 받을 자격이 되나

    영문 가이드 대부분이 금액에서 멈춥니다. 하지만 금액은 네 가지 조건 중 하나일 뿐이고, 나머지 셋에서 걸리는 경우가 많습니다.

    • 외국 국적의 비거주자. 규정은 대상을 외국환거래법상 “비거주자”로 정의합니다(외국인관광객 등에 대한 부가가치세 및 개별소비세 특례규정 제2조). 실무적으로는 한국 체류 6개월 미만으로 통용되며, 장기 유학생이나 취업자가 대상에서 빠지는 이유가 여기 있습니다. 다만 6개월이라는 숫자는 비거주자 판정 기준에서 나온 것이지 환급 규정에 직접 적힌 값이 아닙니다. 경계에 있다면 짐작하지 말고 매장이나 세관에 확인하세요.
    • 한 매장에서 영수증 1건당 1만 5천원 이상. 8천원짜리 영수증 두 장을 합칠 수 없습니다.
    • 구매일로부터 3개월 이내 출국. 이 조건은 규정에 직접 명시돼 있습니다(제6조 제1항 제1호). 구입일로부터 3개월 이내에 국외로 반출한 사실이 확인돼야 합니다. 3월에 사고 7월에 나가면 환급받지 못합니다.
    • 미사용·미개봉 상태. 인천공항 안내도 세관 확인 대상을 미개봉·미사용 물품으로 명시합니다.

    마지막 조건은 특히 유의해야 합니다. 화장품을 사서 여행 중에 뜯어 쓰면 공항에서 환급을 못 받을 수 있습니다. 환급받을 물건은 출국 전까지 개봉하지 않는 편이 안전합니다.

    3. 즉시환급과 공항환급의 차이

    두 가지 경로가 있고, 어느 쪽이 적용되는지는 대체로 금액이 정합니다.

    즉시환급은 계산대에서 부가세를 빼고 결제하는 방식입니다. 공항에서 따로 할 일이 없습니다. 1회 100만원, 체류 중 총 500만원까지입니다.

    공항환급은 매장에서 전액을 결제하고 환급 서류를 받은 뒤 출국 전에 신청하는 방식입니다. 즉시환급 한도를 넘는 구매나, 즉시환급을 운영하지 않는 매장이 여기 해당합니다.

    가능하다면 즉시환급이 거의 언제나 낫습니다. 서류도 없고, 출국일 아침에 줄을 설 일도 없고, 비행기가 이르다고 창구를 놓칠 위험도 없습니다. 매장에서 된다고 하면 그 자리에서 받으세요.

    모든 매장이 참여하는 것은 아닙니다. tax refund 안내 표시를 찾거나 계산대에서 물어보면 됩니다.

    4. 매장에서 바로 받는 법

    1. 여권을 지참합니다. 사진이나 사본은 인정되지 않습니다. 실물이 필요합니다.
    2. 결제 전에 택스리펀드를 요청합니다. 결제가 끝난 뒤에는 대개 되돌릴 수 없습니다.
    3. 부가세 10%가 차감되어 할인된 금액만 결제합니다.
    4. 영수증은 그래도 보관합니다. 1회 한도를 넘는 부분이 있으면 공항에서 처리해야 합니다.

    절차는 이게 전부입니다. 계산할 때 30초쯤 더 걸립니다.

    계산대에 선 김에 하나 더. 단말기가 원화 대신 자국 통화로 결제할지 물으면 거절하세요. 그 선택은 3~7%를 더 물립니다 — 한국에서 카드 결제하기에 정리했습니다.

    5. 공항에서 받는 법

    인천공항이 안내하는 순서는 쇼핑 → 탑승수속 및 세관신고 → 키오스크 → 세관데스크(필요시) → 환급창구입니다(인천국제공항).

    세관이 확인할 수 있는 물건을 갖고 있다면 보안검색 전에 처리하세요. 짐을 부치고 출국장 안으로 들어간 뒤에는 물건을 보여줄 수 없습니다.

    창구 운영 시간을 벗어나는 항공편이라면 자동화기기는 24시간 가능합니다. 시간을 넉넉히 잡으세요. 탑승수속 이후에 하는 절차라, 출국이 몰리는 아침에 줄을 발견하는 시점이 탑승 40분 전이면 곤란합니다.

    6. 못 받는 흔한 경우

    실패는 대개 금액 때문이 아닙니다.

    • 여권을 숙소에 두고 옴. 여권이 없으면 환급이 안 되고, 나중에 추가할 수도 없습니다.
    • 결제 후에 요청. 시점이 중요합니다. 카드를 넣기 전에 말해야 합니다.
    • 이미 뜯거나 사용한 물건. 화장품과 식품이 특히 그렇습니다.
    • 3개월이 지남. 장기 여행이나 재입국이 반복되면 모르는 새 넘어갑니다.
    • 거주자에 해당. 체류가 길어 거주자로 분류되면 비자 종류와 무관하게 대상이 아닙니다.
    • 영수증이 너무 잘게 나뉨. 같은 매장에서 9천원 영수증 두 장은 1만 8천원으로 합쳐지지 않습니다.
    • 공항에 늦게 도착. 창구는 닫히고, 줄은 탑승 시각을 봐주지 않습니다.

    7. 체크리스트

    • 사진이 아닌 여권 실물을 들고 쇼핑
    • 한 매장 영수증 1건에 1만 5천원 이상
